Ram Ram 1500 Classic

Importing a used RAM 1500 Classic from the USA

The RAM 1500 Classic is the pragmatic full-size pickup: the previous-generation DS truck that RAM kept in production as a lower-cost model alongside the newer DT-generation 1500. That means big-truck capability, a familiar mechanical package and strong used supply in the States — a combination that makes buyers ask us to help import a used RAM 1500 Classic from the USA. USCar Trader works strictly as an independent broker of used vehicles; we source from US sellers, verify the VIN and build origin, and handle shipping and clearance without taking a dealer margin on the truck.

A US pickup is a genuinely different proposition on German roads, so it pays to understand the powertrains, the plant it came from, and the homologation steps before you buy. Here is the detail.

Model history and generations

The "Classic" is the fourth-generation RAM 1500 (project DS), which launched for 2009 and was face-lifted over the following years. When the all-new fifth-generation DT arrived for 2019, RAM continued building the older truck under the "Classic" name to fill the value end of the range, and it remained in production into the mid-2020s. Because it is essentially a refined version of a long-running design, parts are plentiful and the mechanicals are well understood — an advantage when servicing an import in Germany.

Engines and drivetrain

Three petrol-side powertrains dominate the used pool. The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 (around 305 hp) is the base engine, economical for a full-size truck. The headline choice is the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 producing roughly 395 hp and 410 lb-ft — the classic American V8 sound and torque. Some later Classics offered the HEMI with eTorque mild-hybrid assistance for smoother stop-start. Earlier DS trucks also offered a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6. Most are paired with the excellent 8-speed 8HP automatic (marketed as TorqueFlite) and offered in rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive with a transfer case. A defining feature is the rear coil-spring suspension, which gives the RAM a noticeably smoother ride than leaf-sprung rivals.

Which trim makes sense

US trims run from the fleet-focused Tradesman and Express up through SLT, Big Horn / Lone Star, and the blacked-out Warlock. Bodies are the Quad Cab (smaller rear doors) and the roomier Crew Cab, with 5-foot-7 or 6-foot-4 beds. Equipment varies widely — cloth or leather, the Uconnect touchscreen in several sizes, towing packages and off-road kit — so match the cab, bed and trim to how you intend to use the truck.

Supply on the US market

Supply is deep and steady. The 1500 Classic sold in huge numbers to private buyers, tradespeople and fleets, so you can be selective on drivetrain, cab configuration and mileage. HEMI Crew Cab 4x4 trucks are the most sought-after; V6 rear-drive Quad Cabs are the value end. Rust on frames and brake lines is the main concern on trucks from northern salt-belt states, while southern and western examples tend to be cleaner underneath. No European prices are quoted here — judge value against live listings.

Who benefits from importing

A used RAM 1500 Classic suits buyers who want real towing and payload, a comfortable ride and a distinctive road presence, and who accept the running costs and size that come with a full-size American pickup. Tradespeople, horse and boat owners, and enthusiasts of the HEMI V8 are the natural audience. If you mostly drive in tight city centres, be honest about the truck's footprint before you commit.

Known weak points and maintenance

The HEMI V8 and 8HP transmission are fundamentally robust, but there are known weak points. The HEMI is prone to a lifter/roller-follower "tick" that in worst cases leads to a failed lifter and camshaft, so listen carefully on a cold start and check for service records. Exhaust manifold bolts can shear and cause a ticking exhaust leak. The 8HP's shift quality depends on fresh fluid and, occasionally, a valve-body or software update. On the electrical side, the TIPM/integrated power module can misbehave as on other FCA vehicles. Frame and brake-line corrosion is the main structural concern on northern trucks. Confirm the eTorque 48V system is healthy on trucks equipped with it, and check the coil-sprung rear for worn bushings on hard-worked examples.

US and EU spec compared

US pickups run amber front markers, mph-priority clusters, and no rear fog lamp — all TÜV items. The sheer width and length exceed typical European norms and affect parking and some city restrictions. Uconnect radios are set to North American bands without DAB. Otherwise the truck is left-hand drive as standard and mechanically serviceable at any competent workshop, with the HEMI and 8HP being widely understood.

The import process in detail

The route is: select the truck → verify the VIN and confirm the assembly plant and origin → secure funds in escrow → book ocean freight (RoRo is common for large pickups) from a US port → clear German customs → present for TÜV individual approval (§21) with the required lighting and fog-lamp work → register at the Zulassungsstelle. Large pickups sometimes need extra attention on lighting height and marker positions, which we plan for in advance.

What customs clearance really costs

Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.

Two separate charges, stated plainly. Import duty: since 1 July 2026, Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 allow a 0% rate for vehicles of provable US origin shipped directly from the USA, in force until 31 December 2029. This matters especially for the 1500 Classic because it is built in both Warren, Michigan (USA) and Saltillo, Mexico — a Mexican-plant truck typically does not establish US origin, so the applicable rate depends on the individual VIN. We confirm origin from the VIN and never promise "duty-free". Import VAT: German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% always applies, on the customs value, regardless of origin. We add no margin to either figure.

TÜV, modifications and registration

Expect European headlight units or a beam conversion, a retrofitted rear fog lamp, and a km/h speed display. On some large pickups additional side and rear marker or reflector adjustments are needed. The odometer is documented and checked against the vehicle history. Once the TÜV certificate is issued, registration proceeds as for any used import; note the truck's weight and dimensions can affect tax and toll classification.

Check before you buy

Before buying, verify: (1) the VIN matches all documents and confirm the assembly plant; (2) a clean Carfax/AutoCheck history with no salvage, flood or lemon branding; (3) the frame and brake lines for salt-belt rust; (4) HEMI cold-start with no lifter tick and evidence of oil changes; (5) 8HP transmission service history; (6) that the title is a clean, transferable US title; and (7) tow-package and eTorque functionality if fitted.

Common questions

Can I register a RAM 1500 Classic in Germany?

Yes. It is left-hand drive and, with European lighting, a rear fog lamp and a TÜV individual approval, it registers like any other imported vehicle — allowing for its size and weight class.

Does the 1500 Classic qualify for 0% EU import duty?

Only with provable US origin. Because it is built in both Michigan and Mexico, the answer depends on the VIN. We check the plant before you commit and never guarantee duty-free.

Is the 19% import VAT always charged?

Yes. German import VAT of 19% applies to every imported vehicle regardless of origin, calculated on the customs value.

HEMI V8 or Pentastar V6?

The HEMI offers the classic V8 character and towing muscle; the V6 is more economical and cheaper to run. Choose by workload and fuel budget.

What are the main reliability risks?

The HEMI lifter tick, exhaust manifold bolts and neglected 8HP servicing, plus frame corrosion on northern trucks. A documented history is essential.

How is a full-size pickup shipped?

Usually roll-on/roll-off from a US port because of its size, with escrow protecting your funds until the truck is verified and loaded.

What is the difference between Classic and the new 1500?

The Classic is the previous DS-generation truck kept in production as a value model; the current DT 1500 is the newer, more refined design.
